Michael Conley Jr., an unrestricted free agent in the coming off-season, is due for a huge pay day. However, it’s not a lock that he re-signs with Memphis Grizzlies. According to latest NBA Trade Rumors, Grizzlies are looking to trade the point guard if they can add a valuable piece or two.
The New York Knicks, still seeking a floor general, have thrown their names into the hat. According to ESPN’s Trade Machine, New York will need to offer Arron Afflalo and rookie Jerian Grant for the salaries to match. On paper, that sounds like a good deal for both teams.
According to several insiders, the Knicks are ready to offer anyone barring Carmelo Anthony and Kristaps Porzingis to secure the services of Conley. If the Knicks fail to land Conley via trade, they will pursue him aggressively during the off-season with a maximum level contract.
The Grizzlies stand to lose their point guard for nothing. By trading Conley, they can secure their future with a solid wing such as Afflalo and an up-and-coming PG such as Grant.
Big Three in New York…
If Conley lands in New York, the Knicks fans would have plenty of reasons to rejoice. A Big Three of Anthony, Conley and Porzingis will help them compete with Cleveland Cavaliers for the East.
However, there is one minor hurdle. Conley Jr. is recovering from an Achilles injury that has sidelined him for several games this season. Conley, 28, has been injury-prone over the last few seasons but age is on his side.
Conley, an old-school floor general who plays lockdown defense, would instantly fit into Phil Jackson’s triangle system. As a pass-first point guard, Conley would thrive while playing alongside Porzingis and Anthony.
This season, Conley is averaging 15.1 points and 5.9 assists from 37 games.
