NBA Trade Rumors: Sacramento Kings Eyeing Ricky Rubio? Ben McLemore, Rudy Gay Moving Out Soon?
The Sacramento Kings are finally in a position to acquire the pass-first point guard it has been craving for all these years. The question now is will they?Advertisement
The team’s point-guard rotation is currently one-man deep. Only Darren Collison is guaranteed a roster spot for the 2016-17 NBA season. The Kings have the necessary pieces to remedy the situation.
Sacramento can trade away one or two of its wing players in exchange for a reliable backup point guard, a player who could play alongside Collison if needed.
Minnesota Timberwolves point guard Ricky Rubio could be a good fit to the Kings. The Timberwolves’ decision to draft NCAA stud Kris Dunn has sparked rumors that Rubio could be on his way out of Minneapolis. Sacramento is being mentioned as a potential landing spot for the Spaniard.
Hoops Habit indicated that Rubio would be a good puzzle piece for the Kings. He would add much-needed point guard depth to the team, especially now that Rajon Rondo and Seth Curry have signed with the Chicago Bulls and the Dallas Mavericks, respectively.
In order to acquire Rubio, the Kings can trade talented but inconsistent shooting guard Ben McLemore to the Timberwolves. To make the offer even more appealing, the Kings can package McLemore with either Kosta Koufos, Willie Cauley-Stein or Skal Labissiere.
According to A Royal Pain, McLemore was already receiving interests from other teams midway through last season. However, a deal was never reached.
This offseason, McLemore has once again found himself at the center of trade rumors after the Kings signed shooting guards Arron Afflalo and Garrett Temple. Afflalo was given a two-year $25 million paycheck while Temple agreed to a three-year $24 million deal. With those contracts, it’s hard to fathom that the two were brought in just to play second and third fiddle to McLemore.
Veteran small forward Rudy Gay could also be on his way out of Sacramento. There were reports claiming that the 29-year-old Baltimore native could be dealt to the Indiana Pacers in exchange for combo guard Monta Ellis.
