The Los Angeles Clippers are reportedly planning to strike a deal with the Oklahoma City Thunder involving Kevin Durant and Blake Griffin this summer, recent NBA trade rumors suggested.
Durant will become a free agent this summer and is expected to get offers most of the teams in the league, including the Clippers. However, it is widely believed the superstar forward will eventually decide to stay with the Thunder, the only team who could offer a maximum deal for five years.
The Thunder also went a win away from advancing to the 2016 NBA Finals, which could be a factor when Durant makes his decision, knowing that he wants to contend for a title in the coming years. However, the Clippers are not losing hope and will still try to nab the former NBA Most Valuable Player.
According to NBA analyst Lucas Hann of SB Nation, sources indicated the Clippers are “very dedicated” to their pursuit of Durant this summer. Knowing the Thunder are the only team who could offer a five-year deal, they will attempt to convince Durant to move to Los Angeles and ask Oklahoma City to participate in a sign-and-trade deal.
“They’re gonna give the KD pursuit everything they’ve got, but many experts are expecting him to stay in OKC, so it will get interesting,” Hann said of the NBA trade rumors involving Durant and Griffin.
A sign-and-trade agreement between the Clippers and the Thunder will give Durant the long-term deal that he is reportedly looking for. Sporting News recently reported Durant prefers to sign a long-term deal.
On the other hand, Clippers will solidify their wing rotation and will get a proven scorer. The Thunder will then get a superstar in Griffin instead of losing Durant for nothing via free agency.
It remains to be seen, though, whether or not Durant will leave the Thunder, where he has spent his entire career. Aside from the Clippers, the Los Angeles Lakers, Golden State Warriors, San Antonio Spurs and Washington Wizards are among the likely landing spots for Durant this summer.
