The Rockets have shopped Dwight Howard last week to gauge the market ahead of the trade deadline. Houston held talks with Miami Heat earlier to trade Howard for Hassan Whiteside, as reported by Morning News USA on Tuesday.
The Rockets are eyeing at least one first-round pick for Howard and wants to trade him off ahead of free agency, according to Real GM. Howard was in his third season at Rockets after signing in 2013 off-season. The 30-year-old has made 8 All-Star appearances in his long NBA career. But Howard just didn’t click in Houston this season.
Howard is making $22.3 million this season and is expected to exercise his right to decline next season’s $23.3 million player option in order to return to free agency, reports ESPN.
“I have not asked the Rockets to trade me, nor have I talked about right trades. I want to win. I want this situation to work. I chose this team. And I’m not running because we have been faced with some adversity,” Howard told ESPN earlier.
The Rockets have slumped to 9th position in the NBA with a 27-28 record and are determined to trade off Howard ahead of Thursday’s deadline. The exploratory talks with the Charlotte Hornets won’t bear fruit if both ends fail to find a common ground.
