NBA Trade Rumors: Clippers To Acquire Channing Frye, Magic To Waive Lance Stephenson
Los Angeles Clippers and Orlando Magic are working on a deal which would see L.A. acquiring Channing Frye and Orlando acquiring Lance Stephenson, CJ Wilcox and a future second-round pick, per latest NBA Trade Rumors.Advertisement
The possible trade was first reported by Yahoo’s Adrian Wojnarowski, who further revealed that Orlando would waive Stephenson’s contract which pays him $9 million. Clippers would benefit by acquiring Frye, who is signed through the 2017-18 season at $7.8 million and $7.4 million.
According to Wojnarowski, the Cleveland Cavaliers are still hoping to land Frye but the Clippers could be close to acquiring the veteran power forward. The trade between Magic and Clippers is expected to be finalized by Wednesday, a day ahead of the deadline.
Frye is averaging 5.2 points and 3.2 rebounds from 17 minutes this season. Many playoff-bound teams view the veteran as an integral cog and someone capable of mentoring young forwards. The Clippers could definitely benefit from his inclusion, especially with Blake Griffin’s injury woes and their lack of depth at the 4 spot.
Stephenson signed a two-year $18 million deal with Charlotte Hornets last season before being traded to Clippers this past offseason. While most teams are unwilling to gamble with Stephenson, with Clippers view the swingman’s contract as a way to land an asset or two.
Stephenson, who was expected to revive his career under Clippers coach Doc Rivers, is averaging only 4.7 points and 2.5 rebounds from 15.8 minutes this season. Until a few years ago, Stephenson as hailed as the “Lebron James Stopper” and was an integral member of those Indiana Pacers squads that made the Eastern Conference Finals. He also led the league in triple-doubles during the 2013-14 season when he averaged 13.8 points, 7.2 rebounds and 4.6 assists.
