NBA Trade Rumors: Bulls Acquiring DeMarcus Cousins?
DeMarcus Cousins, the Sacramento Kings center, could be traded to Chicago Bulls before the start of the new season, per several reports.Advertisement
Since getting drafted by the Kings in 2010, Cousins has been responsible for Sacramento firing five different coaches, with George Karl the latest victim. Will Dave Joerger, the new head coach of the Kings, tolerate Cousins’ tantrums or ship the all-star center?
The Bulls have had an extremely active offseason. First, they traded longtime franchise player Derrick Rose, Justin Holiday and a second round pick to the New York Knicks to acquire Robin Lopez, Jerian Grant and Jose Calderon (who was later traded to the Los Angeles Lakers).
After that, the Bulls signed hometown star Dwayne Wade and veteran point guard Rajon Rondo in free agency. A trade to acquire Cousins would likely make the Bulls strong contenders in the East.
DeMarcus Cousins: What can Bulls offer?
According to this Hoops Habit writer, the Kings have a number of interesting trade pieces such as Bobby Portis, Doug McDermott, Nikola Mirotic and rookie Denzel Valentine.
Portis and Valentine were the stars of the Chicago’s Summer League campaign. Mirotic, a versatile stretch-4 power forward, is entering the final year of the three-year contract he signed with the Bulls in 2014-15.
According to ESPN’s trade machine, a package of Nikola Mirotic, Taj Gibson and Doug McDermott should make the salaries work. It’s not a bad deal for the Kings, who will acquire a veteran rim protector such as Gibson, an exciting young shooter such as McDermott and a stretch-4 in Mirotic.
This Bulls writer argues that Cousins, who has a history of disciplinary issues, will be kept under check by Chicago’s three alpha males – Dwayne Wade, Jimmy Butler and Rajon Rondo.
“With the leadership on the Bulls right now (Wade, Butler, and Rondo), Cousins would be a great teammate and would for once in his career have guys around him that he can win with. He would for once in his career have guys to look up to,” writes Daniel Pierrot.
