Brandon Knight, the Phoenix Suns point guard, could be traded to the Philadelphia 76ers at some stage before February’s trade deadline, per league sources.
Knight has been relegated to a sixth man role by coach Earl Watson, who is intent on a starting backcourt comprising of Eric Bledsoe and Devin Booker.
The Suns have reportedly handed Booker the keys to the team and view him as the new franchise player.
Even though Knight has embraced the sixth man role, the Suns view him as a trade chip, especially since rookie Tyler Ulis and veteran Leandro Barbosa also a part of the backcourt rotation.
Ever since June’s NBA Draft, there have been rumors floating around that the Suns are open to the idea of trading at least one of Knight or Bledsoe.
As of this writing, it seems like they prefer trading Knight.
Brandon Knight to Sixers?
Philadelphia 76ers still don’t have an established starting point guard.
Jerryd Bayless, who signed a three-year, $27 million contract this summer, is currently battling a sore left wrist and could miss the start of the regular season.
In Bayless’ absence, sixers coach Brett Brown has been starting sophomore T.J. McConnell during the ongoing preseason.
Besides McConnell, Spaniard Sergio Rodríguez has also seen some playing time as the backup point guard.
A player like Brandon Knight would instantly solve Philadelphia’s problems at the 1 spot. Last season, Knight averaged a career-high 19.6 points and 5.6 assists from 50 starts (out of 52 games).
Last week, ESPN insider Chad Ford reported that Knight was still one of the players that is most likely to be traded in the coming months.
“The Suns might actually prefer to trade Knight who, while younger, bigger and a bit more durable, isn’t the decision-maker or dynamic scorer that Bledsoe is.
“Expect one of these two Suns guards (Bledsoe or Knight) to be gone by the trade deadline,” wrote the insider.
The Sixers could offer either Nerlens Noel or Jahlil Okafor for Knight. A direct swap between Okafor and Knight has the approval of ESPN’s Trade Machine.
