With the Atlanta Hawks acknowledging their willingness to listen to trade offers for Al Horford, the Los Angeles Lakers have emerged as strong suitors, according to latest NBA trade rumors.

With the February 18 deadline fast approaching, the Lakers have put four veteran players on the trade block, namely Roy Hibbert, Nick Young, Lou Williams and Brandon Bass. Realistically, the Hawks would demand at least D’Angelo Russell and Julius Randle packaged with Lou Williams for a player of Horford’s potential. After all, Horford is a former 3-time All-Star.

Would the Lakers trade future stars for an established one? No doubt it is a huge gamble. Horford, drafted by the Hawks with the third overall pick in 2007, would like to finish his career in Atlanta. But the Dominican star understands the appeal of a city with more international flavor.

Spanish-speaking California market….

“Atlanta has the potential for a guy like myself to maximize (the business) part of it. But obviously there are other cities, bigger cities (like L.A.) that are more appealing probably. The impact would be bigger if that is what you are looking for,” Horford told Yahoo Sports.

Horford’s wife, Amelia Vega, made history by becoming the first Dominican woman to win the Miss Universe pageant back in 2003. Horford and his wife would have plenty of media opportunities in the bright lights of L.A.

Also, Horford and his family would enjoy California, which is inhabited by a large Spanish-speaking population. The Hawks have plenty of reasons to trade Horford, who is an unrestricted free agent this summer. And the Lakers are desperate for a quality center to anchor the defense.

Whiteside still No. 1 target

Though Hassan Whiteside is considered the more coveted target, the Lakers would be as happy if they can land Horford either via trade or free agency. The only question is, are they willing to sacrifice future stars just to land a player nearing 30?

This Lakers fan site plotted an interesting three-team deal which sends Roy Hibbert to Minnesota, Horford to L.A. and Nikola Pekovic to Atlanta Hawks. ESPN Trade Machine has approved the potential trade.
