NBA Trade Rumors 2016: Los Angeles Lakers Could Acquire Jahlil Okafor for No. 2 Pick
The Los Angeles Lakers are expected to make major moves this summer in the hope of ending their playoff drought. The Lakers, who own the No. 2 pick in the 2016 NBA Draft, could consider trading the pick to overhaul their frontcourt rotation.Advertisement
According to ESPN insider Chad Ford, the Lakers could consider moving the second overall pick to the Philadelphia 76ers in exchange for Jahlil Okafor and a 2017 first-round pick. Ford pointed out the Lakers liked what they saw from Okafor during draft workouts last summer before they eventually used their No. 2 pick to acquire D’Angelo Russell.
Okafor, who ended up as third overall pick last year, had a solid rookie season for the 76ers, as he averaged 17.5 points on top of 7.0 rebounds and 1.2 blocks per game. However, the 20-year-old center’s rookie season was cut short after undergoing surgery to repair a small meniscus tear in his right knee.
Recent NBA trade rumors suggested 76ers are planning to shop Okafor and Nerlens Noel this summer. According to ESPN, Okafor is reportedly the most likely to be dealt because 76ers officials were disappointed of how the former Duke standout handled himself off the court. He was involved in a nightclub fight and was also stopped for reckless driving.
The 76ers are eyeing another high draft pick this year to pair up with their first-overall pick. Philadelphia won the draft lottery in May, getting the chance to nab either Ben Simmons or Brandon Ingram.
More NBA Trade Rumors: Noel to Atlanta Hawks for Jeff Teague?
Meanwhile, Yahoo Sports also reported the 76ers have sat down with the Hawks to discuss a deal involving Noel and All-Star point guard Jeff Teague. The two teams are still talking about the possible trade, but no agreement is imminent with less than a month before the 2016 NBA Draft.
The Hawks considered moving Teague in February before the deadline but eventually kept their core players, including Al Horford and Paul Millsap. Horford could also bolt out of Atlanta when he hits free agency this summer, which could open up a space for Noel in case the Hawks and 76ers strike a deal.
Teague averaged 15.7 points and 5.9 rebounds in 79 regular-season games for the Hawks this year. On the other hand, Noel posted 11.1 points on top of 8.1 rebounds and 1.5 blocks in 67 games.
