The free agent center has agreed to sign with the Wizards on Monday, according to sources. Hollins, a seven-footer, traveled to join the Wizards camp on Sunday evening. He was cut from the Memphis Grizzlies roster after featuring in seven preseason games and training camp in October.
Hollins’ performance made him a strong contender for the final roster. He averaged 5.4 points, three rebounds and 83.3 percent field-goal shooting. The Grizzlies had plans to sign him for this season, but the Wizards picked him first.
Washington faces defending Eastern Conference champions’ Cleveland Cavaliers on the roads on Tuesday with a 6-8 win record. Both center Nene and forward Drew Gooden are out with injuries. In this situation, Hollins’ inclusion will add more depth and activity in the Wizards’ front court. The Wizards have taken the decision to waive small forward Martell Webster to create roster space for the seven-foot center.
In his 9-year NBA career, Hollins averages 3.7 points and 2.2 rebounds per game. He is a veteran out of UCLA.
