Kevin Durant is expected to sign a two-year extension with Oklahoma City Thunder, with an opt out clause after one year so he can once again become a free agent next season. In such a scenario, the Boston Celtics have emerged as the favorites to lure Durant next season, per a league source.
According to Sherrod Blakely of CSN New England, Durant is “seriously considering” the Celtics after an impressive meeting with the 17-time NBA champions on Saturday which was also attended by New England Patriots legend Tom Brady.
Kevin Durant impressed by Boston’s pitch…
“A league source with intimate knowledge of Boston’s thinking in regards to Durant as well as another league source, both told CSNNE.com that Boston’s pitch to Durant this weekend was good enough to where he’s “seriously considering” the Celtics right now as opposed to down the road,” Blakely reported on Sunday.
While Blakely’s report suggests that Celtics could be an option now “as opposed to down the road”, one league source informs that Durant could wait and see how Boston’s young team, bolstered by the addition of Al Horford, perform in the forthcoming season.

If Boston finishes with a top-3 seed and makes a deep playoff run, they would significant improve their chances of landing the former MVP next summer.
After Brady’s pitch to Durant on Saturday, Boston’s other star athletes – David Ortiz and Julian Edelman – have also made their pitches to the superstar forward via social media.
Al Horford factor…
There were initial reports that Durant was keen on team up with Horford. Therefore, Horford signing with Celtics could only bode well for the organization in their pursuit of Durant.
Earlier this this year, Zach Lowe of ESPN.com reported that Durant wanted to team up with Horford down the road. “I heard from two really powerful guys (in NBA). Who don’t normally BS around – they said that they have heard that Horford is on the shortlist of guys that Durant would really want to play with.”
According to CBS Sports, Kevin Durant will likely choose between Oklahoma City Thunder, Golden State Warriors and Boston Celtics on Monday. Expect Durant to remain with Thunder for another year and re-asses his future next summer.
