What's This?

Joe Dumars could become General Manager of the New Orleans Pelicans. Dumars maintains a close relationship with Tom Benson.

The Pelicans are currently in a mess. Alvin Gentry’s first season only managed to register a 11-25 win record. The franchise is seeking a change. New Orleans Saints’ general manager Mickey Loomis has now taken a greater personnel role, more than current GM Dell Demps. But he is basically from a football background.

“Mickey is a football guy, not a basketball guy,” a Pelicans exec said.

Dumars is credited with the successful build-up of the Pistons team in the early 2000’s that clinched one championship, but his controversial moves led to the downfall of the franchise.

Dumars hails from Shreveport, and he attended both high school and college in Louisiana. The Pelicans are looking at him as an intriguing candidate for the apex position, as the man led Pistons to six conference finals. Joe Dumars’ later moves jeopardized the Pistons’ progress, but his initial years of success draws trade interest.
