Iman Shumpert, the Cleveland Cavaliers guard, could be used as the primary trading chip for the NBA champions to acquire Minnesota Timberwolves point guard Ricky Rubio, per sources.
Shumpert is currently in the dock with the Cavs after his arrest over the weekend for driving under the influence and possession of marijuana.
Even though the Cavaliers organization has maintained that it wishes to support Shumpert during the player’s impending court case, word on the street is that the team would rather trade the defensive specialist.
Iman Shumpert to face court case
Remember, Shumpert could face suspensions from both the NBA and the Cavs besides other legal ramifications over the next month or so. It’s highly unlikely that Shumpert is able to join the Cavs’ training camp later this month.
Shumpert is still a key perimeter defender for the Cavs. However, his inability to contribute on offense, not to mention his inconsistent jump shot, have made his expendable, especially for a player such as Rubio.
The Cavs and Rubio have been linked quite a bit in recent weeks.
The Minnesota Timberwolves are seemingly ready to hand the reigns of starting point guard to rookie Kris Dunn, who was mighty impressive during the Las Vegas Summer League.
Though new coach Tom Thibodeau has maintained that Rubio still has a future with the T’Wolves, the Spaniard himself realizes that Dunn is gunning for his spot in the starting lineup.
ESPN’s Trad Machine approves a trade featuring Iman Shumpert and Mo Williams for Ricky Rubio. Even though the Cavs can use some of their trade exceptions (like the ones acquired for Matthew Dellavedova and Anderson Varejao), it would be easier for them to ship both Williams and Shumpert for the Minnesota floor general.

Rubio, a good fit with Cavs?
According to this Hoops Habit writer, Rubio would be the perfect complement to Kyrie Irving in Cleveland’s backcourt.
“Ricky Rubio would be the perfect complement to Irving and fit for the Cavaliers.
“With Zach LaVine and Kris Dunn as the future at point guard for the Minnesota Timberwolves, Rubio is likely an available asset. He’s mentioned in the past how he’s wanted out of Minnesota and to play in a bigger market.
“Rubio would finally have a chance to play for a championship if he were traded to the Cavs. His overall scoring is still a work in progress, but his passing ability is close to being elite,” opined the writer.
Even though the Cavs have LeBron James and Kyrie Irving as its two primary playmakers, the addition of Ricky Rubio is sure to make their offense even more exciting.
Iman Shumpert, a player with a defense-first attitude, could prove to be a good fit with Thibodeau and the Timberwolves. Even though Zach LaVine is the designated starting shooting guard, Shumpert could play as a back-up at the 3 and 4 spots and help that young team.
