NBA Rumors: DeMarcus Cousins To Be Traded After June 23 NBA Draft
DeMarcus Cousins, the embattled Sacramento Kings center, is set to be traded during the off-season after disciplinary issues continue to haunt the former Kentucky product, as per latest NBA Rumors.Advertisement
To their credit, Cousins and Kings coach George Karl successfully ironed out their differences for most of the ongoing season. However, after Kings handed Cousins a one-game suspension recently, there is once again talks within the organization to find a new home for the troubled big man.
According to the Sacramento Bee, Cousins would be traded immediately after the June 23 NBA Draft. The report also claims that Kings GM Vlade Divac is looking to hire “an experienced executive who can help him negotiate a decent deal (for Cousins).”
The last straw…
The Kings have been resisting trading Cousins for a long time. After all, Cousins is undeniably the best big man in the sport today. However, his latest one-game suspension is the last straw.
The trade rumor shouldn’t come as a surprise. Cousins has received more suspensions, flagrant fouls and disciplinary-related suspensions than any other NBA player over the last 3 years. Despite Cousins’ troubles, the Kings are 13-41 without him in his five-plus seasons in Sac-Town.
According to Kings writer Ailene Voisin, the Houston Rockets, Boston Celtics, Dallas Mavericks, Los Angeles Lakers and Los Angeles Clippers will be most aggressive in their pursuit of Cousins.
Cousins doesn’t respect coaches?
Since Cousins was drafted in 2010, Sacramento Kings have been forced to fire a plethora of coaches, including Paul Westphal, Keith Smart and Tyrone Corbin. Though Karl still has a job, the Kings center hasn’t made his life easy. “All four (coaches) were disrespected by their best player and attempted to discipline him in the usual manners: fines, suspensions, kicking him out of practice, removing him temporarily from the starting lineup,” writes Voisin.
Besides the aforementioned four coaches, Michael Malone, the current Denver Nuggets coach, also had run-ins with Cousins during his one-plus season in Sacramento. Malone couldn’t prevent his temperamental superstar from exceeding the league-imposed limited on technical fouls (15). This season, too, Cousins already has 15 technical fouls with four weeks left with the Kings schedule.
Is there a coach out there who can discipline Cousins? Perhaps a trade is the best way to go for the Sacramento Kings, who have been putting up with Cousins’ fits for over five years.
On Friday, coach Karl was asked if his relationship with Cousins was curable. “I can’t answer that question. Hopefully, we can communicate, and it gets to a good place,” said the veteran coach.
