NBA Rumors: DeMarcus Cousins, the all-star big man, is set to be traded by the Sacramento Kings during the off-season. Boston Celtics, Los Angeles Lakers and Houston Rockets have emerged as leading trade suitors.
According to the Sacramento Bee, Cousins would be dealt with soon after the June 23 NBA Draft. The report also claims that Kings GM Vlade Divac is looking to hire “an experienced executive who can help him negotiate a decent deal (for Cousins).”
Even though Cousins’ five-year stint with Sacramento has been riddled with disciplinary issues, fines and suspensions, veteran general managers reckon they can resurrect the big man’s career.
“A number of league executives fancy themselves as saviors, perceive the Kings as perpetually dysfunctional and are intrigued by the All-Star center’s enormous talents. Keep an eye on Houston, Dallas, Boston, the Lakers and the Clippers, to name a few,” writes Kings reporter Ailene Voisin.
Until a few months back, the feeling within the Sacramento camp was to protect and support Cousins no matter what. However, his most recent suspension, reportedly handed out by coach George Karl, is being viewed as the last straw. The Kings are looking to move on from Cousins.
Celtics, Lakers and Rockets are all viable landing spots for Cousins. Celtics could offer a package of first-round draft picks, Jared Sullinger and Kelly Olynyk to pull off a decent transaction. The Lakers could package Julius Randle, Lou Williams and Nick Young. If the Rockets can convince Dwight Howard to take his talents to Sac-Town, they could pull off a sign-and-trade with the Kings.
Since Cousins is contracted until the end of the 2017-18 season, the team that successfully trades for him will be in a great position to build their franchise around the superstar center. The Lakers have been linked with Cousins for over two seasons. In fact, last year, reports emerged saying Cousins’ agents view Lakers as a desired destination for the fifth-year Kentucky product.
