What's This?

The Boston Celtics feel they are one all-star piece away from contending for a championship. They could be acquiring Sacramento Kings star DeMarcus Cousins for a haul of draft picks and assets, per a league source.

Wyc Grousbeck, owner of the Celtics, revealed over the weekend that his team was not done making offseason moves after the acquisition of all-star center Al Horford. “Well, I feel the phones are definitely ringing. Danny (Ainge) is definitely talking to people for sure, and has indicated that our work is not yet done.

DeMarcus Cousins: the mystery player?

“But I’ve got to say that I feel good about this team and I feel patient. We have draft picks coming up. We have a long-term strategy. I don’t just want (Banner) 18. I want 19 and 20,” said Grousbeck, while addressing a press conference at practice facility in Waltham.

According to CSN New England, Ainge is most likely receiving trade offers for Cousins or Sixers big man Jahlil Okafor. A day after Grousbeck’s comments, Ainge reiterated that the team wasn’t done making changes to its roster this summer. “We are still looking at doing deals and we’re certainly not finished for the summer,” he told reporters during Boston’s Summer League game in Las Vegas.

Last Thursday, Grousbeck spoke to Felger & Mazz (radio show) about a potential trade. “We were just talking about a trade earlier today where the asking price from the other team was for a difficult player, and I’m not going to say who, but it’s dropped pretty significantly since draft night.”

What can Celtics offer for Cousins?

Boston can offer a haul of Jaylen Brown, Jae Crowder, Marcus Smart and Brooklyn’s 2017 draft pick. It would be hard for Sacramento to get a better offer for Cousins.

Prior to last month’s draft night, the Celtics were reportedly pursuing Chicago Bulls all-star wing Jimmy Butler, Milwaukee Bucks guard Khris Middleton, Cousins, Okafor and Nerlens Noel.

In recent weeks, the word from Sacramento’s scribes is that new coach Dave Joerger wants to try and make it work with DeMarcus Cousins. However, what if the Celtics offer their chest of draft picks including Brooklyn Nets’ 2017 first rounder which is expected to be a top-3 pick?
