Boston Celtics coach Brad Stevens missed the Chicago Bulls game on Thursday night. Instead, he traveled to Indiana to visit a former Butler player who’s battling cancer.Advertisement
The Celtics players featured in the Bulls game without their coach. Andrew Smith is the guy who’s undergoing cancer treatment for two years.
“We ask that the private nature of this visit be respected,” the Celtics management said in a statement. The Celtics though didn’t reveal the name of the player. Media outlets, though, were quick to find out that it is former bulldog Smith.
Smith, who played under Stevens in Butler, was diagnosed with non-Hodgkins lymphoma around two years ago. Smith featured in the final four in 2010 and 2011. He was readmitted to the hospital last week.
Smith’s family appealed for prayers on Wednesday.
“Please pray. Pray so very hard. We need a miracle & Andrew asked me to have you all rally with us in prayer in this moment,” his wife Samantha posted in Facebook and Twitter.
