James Harden scored 37 points as Houston Rockets defeated Oklahoma City (OKC) Thunder 110-105 to win their first game of the season after losing three in a row. Thunder led the game for most of the first half until Rockets turned things around in the third quarter.

Harden, who shot below 30 per cent during the first three losses, was desperate for a bounce back game. “I hit the first two shots and I was like: ‘OK, I’ve got something today,” the two-guard said after the game. Harden shot an efficient 12/16 from the field.

“I’m sure all great shooters go through droughts,” said last year’s MVP runner-up. “Mine was pretty terrible, I admit. But it will change. It will all come around. It’s a long season and I’ll go on five, six, 10-game streaks where I’m just on fire and it will even itself out.”

Rockets went on a 8-1 run late in the fourth quarter to take a 107-100 lead.

Russell Westbrook (25 points, 11 assists) made a 3-pointer with 44 seconds left to make it 108-105. But Westbrook and his superstar teammate, Kevin Durant (29 points) both missed last-minute 3-point attempts as the Rockets secured their first victory of the season.

“They’d lost three in a row and they should be desperate. We let them off the hook,” Westbrook rued.

Ty Lawson, the offseason acquisition, made a big impact for the Rockets with 11 assists, 14 points and 4 steals. With Terrence Jones out, the Rockets started Marcus Thornton at the wing.
