March 14, known as National Pi Day, is not just a celebration in the mathematical community, but also a day when restaurants and food stores offer their customers massive freebies and deals.Advertisement
The celebration comes on 3/14, a day that signifies the mathematical constant pi, 3.14, which is the ratio of a circle’s circumference to its diameter. Mathematician Carlos Castillo-Chavez, who studies epidemics at Arizona State University, understands the importance of the constant.
“[Pi] brings you into the world of mathematics, which is magic, mysterious and exciting and always full of challenges for everybody,” he said. Castillo-Chavez notes that pi can be used, as he does, in anything and everything that performs a cyclic function, including waves and heart pulses, NPR notes.
But for some, the day marks alluring deals and huge savings. Some of these deals, as listed by ABC News, are as follows:
Blaze Pizza Today, with 115 branches in 27 states and also in Canada, is offering $3.14 pizzas all day.
Bojangles’ is offering three baked Sweet Potato Pies for $3.14. Based in Charlotte, North Carolina, the chain has 657 outlets, majority of which are based in southeastern United States.
Pizza Hut is offering an opportunity to have free pizza for 3.14 years to those who can solve three math problems by Princeton mathematician John H. Conway. Residents of the 48 contiguous states and Washington, D.C., and who are 18 years and above, can participate in the contest.
Whole Foods Market is offering a discount of $3.14 on a large pie from Whole Foods’ bakery. One can also receive a discount of $2 on large “take and bake” pizza (frozen pizzas are excluded from the offer).
Your Pie is offering pizzas and craft beer combos for $3.14.
It isn’t just restaurants and food stores that are offering freebies. Microsoft is also giving a discount on some Dell laptops, like the Dell XPS 13 9350 Signature Edition laptop.
