Nadine Hernandez Dead: Detective In Derrick Rose Rape Case Dies In Gun Shot Wound
Whittier police received a call at 2:45 p.m. on Tuesday reporting an attempted suicide in the 8400 block of Cia Sierra Ramal. It has been found that the victim is none other than the 44-year-old LAPD detective Nadine Hernandez who was investigating the rape allegations made against NBA star Derrick Rose.Advertisement
Nadine was rushed to the PIH Health Hospital in Whittier where she succumbed to her injury. Whitter police Lt. Steve Dean, who is investigating the case, told Los Angeles Times that the victim died of a “self-induced” gunshot wound to the chest.
“At this time, there are no signs of foul play, and this incident is being investigated as a suicide,” said Lt. Dean on Wednesday. “However, this is an ongoing investigation.”
Her death is being investigated as a suicide, as told by Officer John Scoggins from the Whittier Police Department.
A firearm has been recovered from the scene but it is still unclear whether it was her service weapon or otherwise, said the police spokesperson to LA Daily News.
“Hernandez was among ‘several’ detectives [who were] assigned to the Rose case.
“At this point there is no indication that her case work had any connection to her death.
“The Rose investigation will continue unimpeded.”
LAPD investigators responded to the house on Tuesday, but Whittier police are conducting the investigation, authorities said.
“Out of respect to her family, friends and colleagues who are now learning of this terrible tragedy, we will not be releasing any new information and we will continue to defer to the Whittier Police Department,” said the LAPD in a statement.
The Los Angeles Police Protective League also issued a statement about Hernandez Wednesday.
“Today the men and women of the Los Angeles Police Department are experiencing profound sorrow and grief due to the loss of our friend and colleague, Detective Nadine Hernandez,” the statement said. “We honor our sister’s commitment and work to our community. Detective Nadine Hernandez will be missed by us all.”
44-year-old Hernandez worked in the LAPD’s Robbery-Homicide Division Special Assault Section. She was frequently involved in high-profile sex crime cases, said Officer Liliana Preciado of the LAPD’s Media Relations Section.
