The suspect who opened fire in a deli in Chappaqua, Westchester County, on Monday was targeting a former medical research colleague.


Two people were hospitalized after they were injured in the incident. The suspect, Hang-Jun Chao, has been charged with gunfire.

Chappaqua Shooting: Incident an act of revenge

Following Chao’s arraignment on Monday afternoon, the Westchester County Assistant District Attorney alleged that Dr. Dennis Charney, a neuroscientist who is the dean of the medical college at Mount Sinai, was the target. According to the investigators, the shooting occurred as an act of revenge.

Chao had been sacked from Mount Sinai in 2009. He filed a lawsuit but lost the trial. He appealed but lost again. Charney was the target because he made the decision to terminate Chao’s employment for improprieties with medical practice.

Following the shooting, Charney and another victim were transported to the Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla. Charney’s injuries are not life threatening; and both are expected to survive the attack.

The shooting occurred close to the home of former president Bill Clinton and former secretary of state Hillary Clinton. The establishment where the gunfire erupted was visited by several people in the hamlet, including Bill and Hillary, as reported by CBS New York.

Resident Richard Meyer said, “That was kind of in the back of mind when I went out the door to see what was going on because President Clinton frequents Lange’s when he’s in town. That part of it was obviously very scary.”

“I heard a sharp report,” Tom Duggan, who was driving past the deli at the time, said. “I looked in the mirror because I thought it was a backfire.”

On Monday, Chao was held without bail. The judge signed an order of protection disallowing contact with Charney. As reported by, Chao is facing a second degree murder charge.
