Moto Z China Edition Runs Lenovo’s Android? Company Patches Dangerous Hole

OEMs appear to be trailing a similar path as several tech companies have reportedly been tinkering around their OS to yield their own Android version, the latest of which is the leaked Moto Z, supposedly running Lenovo’s Android skin. Is Lenovo trying a new approach? Will the company promise security?


Moto Z Lenovo Android

Moto Z leaked images show that units sold in China will get rid of Moto’s lightly skinned version of Android in favor of Lenovo. However, this will be in the said region, as models in the United States and other regions will retain the near stock Android users have been accustomed to.

According to HelloMotoHK, as reported by 9to5Google, the Lenovo UI that will reportedly accompany smartphones to be shipped in China already made an appearance during the Tech World keynote. The revelation showed that the UI will feature a home screen without the app launcher, a small search bar on top, and custom icons.

It is also important to note that the navigation buttons do not span the entire width of the phone. A larger settings icon can be found on the right. There are no further details on what Motorola could be planning next.

Lenovo Patch

To continue its streak in offering secure device systems, Lenovo recently fixed a dangerous hole in its rebuilt Solution Center. Previously, it was reported that the hole can allow hackers to gain god mode access on hacked machines. They can also terminate the anti-virus in the system.

Trustwave lead researcher Martin Rakhmanov called out the flaws (CVE-2016-5249 – CVE-2016-5248) which Lenovo addressed accordingly, as reported by The Register.

“This could be used in mounting further attacks by disabling anti-virus or some other protection mechanisms for instance,” Rakhmanov said.

“Specifically, we at Trustwave SpiderLabs’ found that the new version, even though significantly reworked, still allowed unprivileged users to elevate privileges to LocalSystem.”
