What's This?

A woman, Patricia Spann, and her daughter were legally married in Oklahoma this year and are now facing incest charges. It was also reported that a few years earlier, the mother had married her son.

According to the Associated Press, it remains unclear what motivated Patricia Spann and daughter Misty for the March marriage. On Wednesday, the 43-year-old mother and her 25-year-old daughter, made appearances in Stephens County district court.

Marrying a close relative is considered illegal under Oklahoma law; it is also considered incest whether or not a sexual relationship exists.

A name of an attorney was absent from the court documents of both women. There was no publicly listed phone number for their Duncan home, about 80 miles southwest of Oklahoma City.

According to an affidavit filed in court, Detective Dustin Smith of Duncan police stated that he began investigation on August 26. The investigation started after an Oklahoma Department of Human Services Child Welfare Division investigator discovered the information about children in the Spanns’ Duncan house.

The mother hinted that she is the biological mother of Misty and two other males. She added that they came from a first marriage and that she had lost custody of her children.

The mother informed police that she was not in contact with her biological children until about two years ago. When she reunited with Misty, they bonded really well, as reported by the Southwest Oklahoma News.

On March 25 in Comanche County the two got married. She informed police that she had inquired about the issue before they got married. She believed that since her name was no longer on the birth certificate, no law had been violated, according to the affidavit.

It was later discovered by law enforcement authorities that Patricia also married her son in 2008. The son filed for an annulment 15 months later, mentioning “incest.” The son wrote on the affidavit that he was married to his birth mother.

It was reported by authorities that both women are being held on $10,000 bonds.
