What's This?

“Modern Family” may be a comedic twist on real family issues, but cast member Ariel Winter has the show close to her heart, since she has a history of being in a family feud. She spoke about how her real-life mother “emotionally and physically” abused her as a child.

Ariel Winter, the actress who plays Alex Dunphy in the hit television series, appeared on the “The Ellen DeGeneres Show” last March 21. She cleared the air, especially with respect to her ill relationship with mother, Chrisoula Workman.

According to Us Magazine, Ariel has been living with her sister, Shanelle Gray, who has been declared her legal temporary guardian since she was 14 to 17 years old. When Ariel turned 18 last January this year, she has been emancipated from her mother for good.

Ariel allegedly lived with her sister since 2012, when several years of legal battle against her mom finally had effect. Chrisoula was found to be emotionally abusing her, reports Page Six.

She then revealed to Ellen during the episode, “Well, it’s most definitely hard to grow up in the industry, but just grow up in any instance without a mother from a very young age. And it has been very sad for me, but at the same time it’s been much better for me emotionally and physically to be on my own and have a better, safe household and support system.”

Back in 2013, Chrisoula allegedly claimed during an episode of “Dr. Phil” that Gray took Ariel in due to financial gain. When Ariel was asked about this notion, she revealed to Ellen, “I don’t really talk about the reason that I don’t speak to my mother. It’s kind of been publicized, but the reason I don’t really share that is because I want to give her the same respect that she didn’t give to me publicly. It just really didn’t try to fix anything with me. It just tried to make herself look better and I’m not interested in doing that. People can make their own judgments. I did what I had to do for myself.”

Furthermore, Ariel also commended her sister and said, “She’s been the best part of my life. She really is my best friend. She’s the most important thing to me. She’s been there for me through absolutely everything. And I just love her so much. I count on her more than anything.”

Ariel Winter may be one of the actresses that brought “Modern Family” to life in screen, but in truth, she has had legal battles with her real life mom, Chrisoula Workman.
