Investigation is ongoing to establish the circumstance surrounding a hit-and-run incident that killed MMA fighter Marcus Kowal’s son and injured his teenage aunt.
The Hawthorne Police Department reported that officers were dispatched around 4:15 p.m. on Saturday to the intersection of 133rd Street and Hawthorne Boulevard. They were reporting to a traffic accident involving a pedestrian.
According to CBS Los Angeles, when they arrived at the scene, authorities found a 15-month-old boy in his stroller and a 15-year-old girl on the street near the crosswalk. It was reported that paramedics administered CPR on Kowal’s son, who was discovered without a pulse.
The toddler and her teenage aunt were taken to Harbor UCLA Medical Center. While at the medical facility, the toddler was placed in ICU but later passed away due to injuries. The toddler’s family members later identified him as Liam Mikael Kowal.
MMA fighter Kowal and wife Mishel Eder replied to heartfelt messages from fans and other fighters on Twitter and Facebook.
“I want to thank everyone who has been there for us, in all forms and shapes. Your support means the world to us. About an hour ago, our baby was declared brain-dead. He tried to fight so hard. He even died at one point but they brought him back,” the MMA fighter wrote.
“He’s a little fighter. His heard is still beating but his brain is no longer working. Our hearts are broken and there’s a void in my soul but we will get through this.”
Police reported that the children were hit by a sport utility vehicle on Hawthorne Boulevard at 133rd Street. According to Mercury News, the SUV driver was 72-year-old Donna Marie Higgins. After the incident, she drove away, but witnesses followed her vehicle and surrounded her about a block away.
A GoFundMe page has been setup for Liam. The page requests people to donate anything they could to help with medical expenses as well as funeral costs.
