All You Need To Know About Miss Universe 2015 Official Winner Miss Philippines: Pia Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach Wurtzbach bested 79 other candidates to get the crown. Wurtzbach was hesitant to take the crown, though, looking left and right for confirmation that indeed, the crown belongs to her. Harvey flashed the result card to the audience to settle the confusion.
Wurtzbach was actually an early favorite, hence winning the top global fan vote. Wurtzbach became the third to be crowned Miss Universe in the Philippines after Gloria Diaz in 1969 and Maria Margarita Moran in 1973.
She lost two times before
Wurtzbach competed twice in the Bb Pilipinas, a local competition that decides the representative for Miss Universe. She lost both times but she did not give up. She joined the competition again in 2015 where she eventually won and chosen as the Philippines representative for Miss Universe 2015.
Wurtzbach was born on Sept. 24, 1989. Her father is German and her mother is Filipino. She was born in Stuttgart, Baden-Wurttemberg. Before winning Miss Universe 2015, she is a professional model, actress, host and TV personality. She started her acting career at age 4.
Filipino designer Albert Andrada made the royal blue mermaid gown she wore for the competition. Speaking with the Inquirer, Andrada said the inspiration behind Wurtzbach gown was ‘The Pearl of the Orient.” The back of the dress has “opulent details of sun rays made of beads, sequins and crystals hich represent the sun rising in the middle of a serene blue sea,” said Andrada. The front of the gown has sapphire colored crystals mixed with the beadwork “representing the beautiful sands of our (Philippines) beaches,” he described more.
“Made of silk gazaar, the gown has a hem of draped multiple folds at the back, which are like fins of the different beautiful fishes found in Philippine waters. The color blue represents the tranquility of the deep blue Philippine seas as well as a tribute to Pia’s queenly beauty. Blue was also her choice of color to wear to Miss Universe,” Andrada told Inquirer.
During the top 5, she was asked whether she thinks the U.S. should have military presence in the Philippines. She said that she sees no problem with that at all. Her answer to the final question as to why she would be the next Miss Universe: “I will use my voice to influence youth. I want to show the world that I am confidently beautiful with a heart.”
