NCIS has remained onscreen for over 13 years. In fact, it is currently airing its 13th season on CBS.
As reported by TV Line, CBS announced through a statement that Michael Weatherly, the actor who plays Special Agent Tony DiNozzo in the hit TV series, has decided to discontinue his role as the character. The statement indicates, “After 13 years on NCIS, Michael Weatherly is leaving the show at the end of this season. He is a valued part of the CBS family, and the immense charm and talent he brings to the screen as ‘Very’ Special Agent Tony DiNozzo has helped make NCIS what it is today – the No. 1 drama in the world.”
“We thank Michael for all of his contributions to this successful franchise and look forward to continuing to develop projects with him as part of our ongoing developmental deal.”
In other news, E! Online reports that Weatherly responded to the statement by confirming his leave via his Twitter page. He wrote, “DiNozzo is a wonderful quixotic character & I couldn’t have had more fun playing him over the past 13 seasons.”
He also spread love for his co-workers by stating, “I will miss the amazing crew & cast, who are like family to me, & to the fans all over the world – THANK YOU, it’s been a fantastic ride.”
Given that the series is still on CBS at present, the network assured fans that the actor will continue as DiNozzo until the end of the season. Furthermore, their statement also clarifies that he would still continue as a flagship for the network, awaiting more projects best suited for him.
Now that Michael Weatherly is out of NCIS, what do you think CBS has in store for him? Will his next role be similar to DiNozzo, or will the fans see a different side of him in future projects to come?
