Miami Heat Rumors: Rudy Gay To South Beach?
The NBA rumor mill is filled to the brim with reports about Rudy Gay and his possible departure from the Sacramento Kings. Recent Miami Heat rumors suggest another likely trade destination for the 6-foot-8 small forward is South Beach.Advertisement
In just a week’s worth of free agency, the Miami Heat already lost its starting shooting guard in Dwyane Wade and starting small forward in Luol Deng. There were also reports that Chris Bosh may soon retire from the league due to his persistent health issues.
Maxwell Ogden of Hoops Habit noted that Pat Riley would be wise to trade for Gay. The veteran wingman would pick up the offensive slack left by Wade and Deng. If the trade comes into fruition, Miami would have a new Big Three of Gay, Goran Dragic and Hassan Whiteside.
Gay has a knack for being tentative on the defensive end, but Heat head coach Erik Spoelstra is the right person to motivate him to play aggressively on both sides of the floor. Spoelstra rewards defensive-minded players with more playing time. Gay would need to adopt defensively in order to stay on the court.
Last season, Gay averaged 17.2 points, 6.5 rebounds and 1.7 assists per game. While he remains to be a solid contributor for the Kings, the team might still trade him before the start of next season. The Indiana Pacers are reportedly interested in Gay, but trade negotiations with the Kings have yet to gain any real traction.
ESPN’s Marc Stein reported on Twitter this week that Gay and Milwaukee Bucks center Greg Monroe are the top two NBA veterans who are currently available to the highest bidder. However, both the Kings and Bucks are still waiting for the right trade partner to come along.
Gay’s contract with the Kings include a player opt-out option for the 2017-18 NBA season. The Kings should play their cards right and move him now, before he walks out for nothing next summer.
