For the first time in modern history, a meteorite is reported to have taken a person’s life. On Saturday, February 6, what authorities said was a meteorite strike hit a college campus in Tamil Nadu, a state in southern India. The impact of the object killed a man named V. Kamaraj and injured three others.

According to Wall Street Journal, the principal of the college in Tamil Nadu’s Vellore district G. Baskar said in a statement, “An unidentified object left a four feet deep crater after descended near a cafeteria inside the Bharathidasan Engineering College campus at about 12.30 p.m. on Saturday.”

Baskar added, “There was a noise like a huge explosion.” The principal also said that officials discovered a 4-feet-deep crater in the scene that contained “bluish black” rock fragments.

The Chief Minister’s Office issued a statement that says, “An accident occurred when a meteorite fell in the school campus of an engineering college in Vellore district’s K Pantharappalli village.”

According to NDTV, the chief minister made a declaration that a relief of 100,000 rupees ($1,473) to Mr. Kamaraj’s family and 25,000 rupees to the three people injured.

However, NY Daily News reports that The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has stated that there is no record in present times of any individual being killed by a meteorite.

On the other hand, it has been reported that some recent meteorite disasters have struck the earth’s surface. In 2013, a meteorite hit the Russian city of Chelyabinsk and injured more than 1,000 individuals. In 2003, meteorites rained down on Chicago suburbs; fortunately, the incident resulted in zero casualty.
