McDonald’s All Day Breakfast Map Inadvertently Shows Obesity Prevalence
McDonald’s has recently launched its All Day Breakfast Menu, allowing patrons to enjoy its popular breakfast offerings not just till 10:30 a.m., but any time of day. This is great news especially for those who can’t get enough McMuffin or Biscuit breakfast sandwiches. However, increased consumption of these may come with serious health consequences.
The company says it decided to serve breakfast all day since there have been tens of thousands of customers asking them to do so on Twitter since 2007. And when it did, McDonald’s decided to divide the U.S. into McMuffin and Biscuit country, depending on the customer’s preference in every given location. Hence, some locations feature the Egg McMuffin, Sausage McMuffin with Egg and Sausage McMuffin in their All Day Breakfast menu, while others offer Bacon, Egg & Cheese Biscuit; Sausage Biscuit with Egg and Sausage Biscuit.
To help customers determine if their All Day Breakfast Menu consists of McMuffins or Biscuits, they came up with a map that lets you see your menu options easily. Biscuits are actually offered in the southern states. Coincidentally, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have said that there are actually three states where obesity is prevalent by 35% or more and these are Arkansas, Mississippi and West Virginia. In addition, the other states nearby such as Alabama, Georgia, Missouri, Louisiana and Oklahoma have obesity prevalence rates between 30 and 35 percent.
It may not be surprising at all considering a Sausage Biscuit with Egg contains 520 calories and 35g of fat. On the other hand, a Sausage McMuffin with Egg contains 470 calories and 30g of fat. Meanwhile, McDonald’s Sausage Biscuit contains 450 calories and 26g of fat while the Sausage McMuffin contains 400 calories and 25g of fat. Furthermore, the Bacon, Egg & Cheese Biscuit has 450 calories and 26g of fat.
The CDC further reports that as much as one-third of adults in the U.S. or 78.6 million are obese. And perhaps, this is also the reason why obesity-related conditions including stroke, type 2 diabetes, certain types of cancer and heart disease have become leading causes of preventable death.
Meanwhile, it should also be noted that McDonald’s also has some healthier options on their All Day Breakfast Menu, including the Fruit ‘N Yogurt Parfait with 150 calories as well as the Fruit & Maple Oatmeal with 290 calories.
