The town of Sinking Spring, Pennsylvania witnessed a gruesome scene on Saturday after a family of five was found dead in an apparent murder-suicide. Mark and Megan Short killed their three young children before shooting themselves.
On Saturday, officers from the Sinking Spring Borough Police Department learned that Megan Short failed to attend a pre-arranged lunch date with a another family member. She could not be reached on either her mobile or home phone.
This became a cause for concern, so the family member decided to call the police. According to the Berks County District Attorney’s office, this led officers to be dispatched to 51 Winding Brook Drive to conduct a welfare check on the Short family.
Upon arrival at the residence, officers said that no one would answer the door. They decided to make forcible entry into the Short home. When they got inside, they found the bodies of the five family members. Megan and her husband Mark were found dead in the living room area of their home, along with their three children and their family dog.
The Sinking Spring Borough Police Department said that all family members died as a result of gunshot wounds. Berks County Deputy Corner Joel Bonilla pronounced the five individuals dead. A handgun had been found near one of the deceased adults.
A handwritten “murder/suicide” note was said to have been found along with the family’s bodies. Moreover, the police investigation revealed there had been domestic issues between the couple in the past.
Back in December of 2015, however, Mark said of his wife, “She’s still the most beautiful girl that I’ve ever met. I’m the luckiest guy in the world to have her as my wife and the mother of my three amazing children!”
Fox News had identified the children as eight-year old Lianna, five-year old Mark Jr.. and two-year old Willow. The Short’s youngest child had gone through a heart transplant previously.
Following the tragedy, Berks County District Attorney released a statement saying, “This is an apparent tragic domestic incident. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the families at this difficult time.”
The investigation into the Short family tragedy is still ongoing.
