Manchester City are now very close to a Champions League quarterfinal berth. City thrashed Dynamo Kiev 3-1 on Wednesday in the first leg quarterfinal of the tournament at Kiev’s Olympic Stadium.
Manuel Pellegrini is set to leave City at the end of this season. But today, he conjured up magical tactics to outplay Dynamo Kiev at their own den. Something future coach Pep Guardiola would be proud of.
City were knocked out of the tournament last season by reigning champions Barcelona at this stage of the competition last season. But with a big margin-away win, this time, the Premiership giants are in tune to progress to the last eight phase.
Kiev coach Sergei Rebrov made two substitutions within half-time, according the Telegraph. By then, Sergio Aguero and Spaniard David Silva had pumped in two goals. Kiev came back in the second half to reduce the margin, but that wasn’t enough. Yaya Toure hammered the last nail.
“It was an exceptional result away from home. We couldn’t have hoped for better,” City captain Vincent Kompany told BT Sport. Pellegrini’s men now faces Liverpool on Sunday in the Capital One Cup final.
