A man involved in a domestic dispute tried to flush his 6-week-old son in the toilet.


The man, identified as 31-year-old Dennis Gateley, faces charges of aggravated assault against an infant, endangering the child’s welfare and illegally possessing a firearm. He also faces charges of assaulting and threatening to kill others in the house. He is currently in custody awaiting arraignment.

Gateley held the head of the baby in the toilet at least twice.

Gateley’s brother said Gateley, the child’s mother and the child’s paternal grandmother were involved in a domestic dispute on Monday. According to the grandmother, Gateley was hitting the child’s mother so she carried the infant and, along with the child’s mother, ran into the bathroom. Gateley barged into the bathroom.

The criminal complaint says Gateley’s brother said he saw the grandmother and mother “yelling at Dennis who was holding the infant child upside-down pushing his head into the toilet.

Gateley was also bit by the family dog during the dispute he was involved in with the other members of the family, according to court papers. The mother said Gateley hit the child’s head on the wall.

As reported by WPXI, the child and the mother who sustained a black eye were able to escape the home. The child was transported to a hospital.

When police arrived at the scene, they learned from the residents of the house that Gateley was in possession of a weapon. A SWAT team was called to the home at 12:30 a.m.

As reported by the Associated Press, in 2009 Gateley was convicted of felony aggravated assault. According to court records, he pleaded guilty to resisting arrest and trying to disarm an officer in the same case. Following a probation period of three years, he was given a jail sentence of six to 12 months.
