Makoto Shinkai is having an awesome week. His anime film “your name.” (Kimi no Na wa.) has earned a staggering 1,277,960,000 yen after its opening day last Friday. That’s around $12.51 million.
The news was posted by Japanese film journalist Hirō Otaka on his Twitter account. Moreover, the official Twitter account of the movie states that after selling 688,000 tickets, “your name.” took the top spot on the Saturday and Sunday charts.
Makoto Shinkai’s animated film opened in 301 theaters in Japan, with predicted total earnings of 6 billion yen, according to TOHO via Anime News Network. The film has already been screened last July 3 during the Anime Expo in Los Angeles. It is expected to be released in 85 countries soon.
Makoto Shinkai’s “your name.” tells the story of Mitsuha and Taki, two unrelated high school students connected by mysterious dreams during their sleep. What follows next is an unforgettable journey to solve the mysteries of their dreams, as well as the life-changing answers they discover in the end.
