Lumia Devices Getting Windows 8.1 ‘Cyan’ Update Today
Microsoft has just begun rolling out the latest Windows 8.1 software update to all the Lumia in what the company calls the ‘Cyan’ update. The new software also brings with it a slew of new Lumia exclusive features and upgrades as well as Microsoft’s personal digital assistant, Cortana, for those who live in the US.
Some of the notable new Windows 8.1 features that are coming with the Cyan update include better customization of the Start screen with a new third-column for customizable Live Tiles as well as the ability to use a photo as a background image. Microsoft has also added the People Hub and the Action Center as one-stop shops for browsing through your address book and social networks as well as see your notifications, quickly toggle settings like Wi-Fi, respectively.
Other Windows 8.1 features coming in the Cyan update include Wi-Fi Sense that automatically connects the device to free Wi-Fi hotspots, Word Flow which is Microsoft’s gesture-capable predictive keyboard, and the company’s personal digital assistant Cortana. If you don’t want to bother Cortana with a simple search for an e-mail or contact, the new Device Search feature will easily and quickly search for what you need by just typing a keyword in the device’s Bing search bar.
The Cyan update also bring updates to Internet Explorer 11, the Nokia Camera, Creative Studio, Storyteller, Office for Windows Phone which includes Word, Excel, Powerpoint, and OneNote, as well as, Outlook, Skype, and OneDrive.
Specifically, the Lumia 520, Lumia 525, Lumia 620, and the Lumia 720 are all getting free upgrades from the local HERE Drive to the global HERE Drive+.
Those who have the Lumia 1520 and Lumia Icon will be getting a few exclusive new features with Cyan including Nokia Rich Recording for better audio capture during video recording and Dolby Digital Plus 5.1 for improved audio output. Lumia 1520 and Lumia Icon users will also be able to use Microsoft’s Screen Share feature to stream content from their devices to a smart TV or projector.
Microsoft did not say which Lumia devices will get the Cyan update first but they did say that the update will come to all Windows 8 Lumia devices in the coming weeks.
