The Los Angeles Lakers are still a work in progress but could eventually become a perennial playoff team in the coming years. Next summer, they will have a chance to bolster their roster anew.

As recent reports suggested, the Lakers will likely target a big man next summer. The names of Pau Gasol and Blake Griffin are floating around, but they could actually catch the one of the biggest fishes next offseason — Rudy Gobert.

Gobert is projected to be the most coveted center next free agency period. The 24-year-old center averaged 9.1 points and 11.0 rebounds on top of 2.2 blocks per game last season. He is arguably the best shot blocker in the league today and is expected to draw a lot of attention next summer.

From the looks of it, the Lakers are in good position to sign Gobert, Hoops Habit reported.

“There will be a lot of suitors for Gobert’s services if he makes it to free agency,” Hoops Habit noted. “Assuming that’s the case, you better believe the Lakers will be right in the mix to sign the Stifle Tower.”

According to the report, Gobert will likely choose the Lakers over the Jazz and other potential suitors. The Lakers have a bigger market, which could make Gobert a household name. It will also be easier for him to be noticed as one of the best big men in the league, which might not happen if he stays with the Jazz.

Gobert is just 24 years old and will be a great fit to the Lakers’ young core. The Lakers boasts young players like Jordan Clarkson, D’Angelo Russell, Julius Randle and Larry Nance. Rookies Brandon Ingram and Ivica Zubac are also expected to develop into high-quality players in the coming years.

Adding Gobert to the mix, the Lakers will have their starting lineup set for the next several years. Veterans Timofey Mozgov and Luol Deng will likely keep getting good amount of playing minutes but will become more valuable as mentors to their young core moving forward.
