It’s advantage Liverpool after first leg of Europa League’s last 16 encounter. And another shocking loss for Manchester United.  Juergen Klopp’s men outsmarted their Premiership rivals, Manchester United, in thunderous conditions at Anfield.

Goal keeper, David De Gea, pulled off a series of stunning saves to keep United alive in the tie. This also shows how poor the Red Devils have been on the field on Thursday as Manchester United failed to create a single opening in the ninety minutes.

Liverpool earned a penalty after Memphis Depay fouled Nathaniel Clyne and Daniel Sturridge converted from the spot in the 15th minute to give the hosts the lead, as reported by the BBC.

Young Rashford has been a sensation of late for Manchester United after his brace against Arsenal. But why did Louis Van Gaal field the natural striker on the wings? Rashford was replaced after featuring for 45 minutes in the right wing.

Brazilian Roberto Firmino doubled the lead in the 73rd minute from close range to settle things for his team. Liverpool ended their four game losing-streak against their biggest Premiership rivals. The team displayed fierce pressing football through-out the game but had to rely on two defensive errors of United players to score.

“We could not cope with their pressure,” Van Gaal said, according to the IBN Live. “Liverpool deserved the goals, but how the goals (came) were cheap. You have to believe in anything,” Van Gaal said, looking to the second leg, “If we can create an atmosphere that Liverpool has done, then everything is possible.”

Juergen Klopp thanked the fans at Anfield. “The atmosphere tonight, I’ll never forget it. It was unbelievable,” Liverpool manager Juergen Klopp said. “That was Liverpool how I knew it before I came here.”
