NBA Live Updates: San Antonio Spurs Vs OKC Thunder – Score And Live Reports
Despite an MVP caliber performance from Kawhi Leonard (32 points, 8 rebounds, 3 steals and 2 blocks), the San Antonio Spurs lost a thrilling game (112-106) to the Oklahoma City Wednesday night as the two Western Conference powerhouse teams commenced their new NBA season.Advertisement
Leonard, the reigning Defensive Player of the Year, impacted the games on both ends of the floor but didn’t get the expected help from the all-star front court pairing of Lamarcus Aldridge (11 points) and Tim Duncan (8 points).
Aldridge, making his debut with the Spurs, shot 4/12 from the field and collected only five rebounds. It was very apparent that the former Trail Blazer scoring machine was still adjusting to Coach Greg Poppovich’s “free-for-all” offensive scheme.
Kevin Durant, playing in his first regular season game since the foot injury, scored 22 points but shot an uncharacteristic 6/19 from the field. Durant looked a shadow of his MVP self. However, Russell Westbrook continued where he left off last season with a game-high 33 points to go along with 10 assists and 2 steals.
Thunder led 105-103 with 54 seconds left in the fourth when Westbrook’s crucial three-pointer gave them a five-point lead. With 12 seconds to go, Thunder led 108-106 when Steven Adams blocked Danny Green’s 24-foot three-point jumper to literally seal the deal for Oklahoma City. With seven seconds to go, Aldridge missed an uncontested 22-foot jumper as Thunder ran away with the victory.
Enes Kanter, in his first season since signing a four-year $70 million deal in the offseason, scored 15 points and collected 16 rebounds from just 24 minutes to prove his worth. Steven Adams was still preferred to start ahead of Kanter due to his defensive presence.
It appears that these power-packed teams are on a collision course next postseason.
