Lauren Holiday, former U.S. soccer star and the wife of New Orleans Pelicans point guard Jrue Holiday, has been diagnosed with brain tumor while pregnant, according to several reports.
Due to the tragic turn of events, Holiday is taking an indefinite leave from his NBA franchise to take care of his ill wife, the Pelicans announced in a statement on Sunday.
“We are all praying for a healthy delivery of their first child and a successful surgery for Lauren. Furthermore, we ask everyone to respect the Holiday’s privacy at this time,” New Orleans GM Dell Demps said via a team statement.
Lauren retired from soccer last year after winning Olympic gold medals with Team USA during the 2008 Beijing Games and 2012 London Games. She was recognized as one of the world’s most respected female soccer players.

Lauren Holiday: A star soccer player
Playing as a midfielder, she scored 24 goals during the course of 133 games for Team USA.
She was also a star in the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL), leading FC Kansas City to a championship in 2015.
Alvin Gentry, coach of the Pelicans, re-assured Holiday that the franchise was fully behind the young couple which battles through the toughest time of their lives.
“The most important thing for Jrue to do right now is be with his wife and family. Every one of our coaches and players understands what Lauren and Jrue are going through, and they know we’re behind them one hundred percent.
“We’ll continue to do everything we can to support them and help them get through these hard times,” said Gentry, while reiterating that the team views Holiday as a vital cog of the team along with Anthony Davis.
After injuries forced Jrue Holiday to miss 90 games during the 2013-14 and 2014-15 seasons, he had a bounce-back season last year, playing 65 games and averaging 16.8 points and 6.0 assists.
The sports world has sent out its prayers to Mr. and Mrs. Holiday.
