Actress Angelina Jolie filed for divorce from Brad Pitt on Monday.
Citing irreconcilable differences, the divorce will bring to an end the two-year marriage between Jolie and Pitt. While the couple first became a subject of speculation in 2004, they confirmed their relationship the subsequent year.
Attorney Laura Wasser has been hired to handle matters concerning the divorce. Known as the “go to divorce lawyer” (according to CNN), she recently represented Pirates of the Caribbean star Johnny Depp in his split with Amber Heard.

According to her bio, Wasser obtained her Bachelor’s of Arts from the University of California, Berkeley, in 1991 and went on to law school at Loyola Law School in 1994. A published author – of the 2013 book “It Doesn’t Have to Be That Way: How to Divorce Without Destroying Your Family or Bankrupting Yourself” – Wasser is a member of the Family Law Section at the Los Angeles County Bar Association and Board Member of the Brady Center to Prevent Gun Violence.
As reported by CNN, Wasser is the daughter of family attorney Dennis Wasser; the duo practice law at their Los Angeles firm Wasser, Cooperman & Carter. Her father named her Laura Allison Wasser (so her initials would spell “LAW”) while, Wasser said, her mother wanted to name her Rebecca.
As reported by Bloomberg, Wasser charges $850 an hour and requires a $25,000 retainer. She is known to rarely represent clients who have less than $10 million.

She has been honored with Harriett Buhai Center for Family Law Zephyr M. Ramsey Award in 2008; Daily Journal Top Women Lawyers 2011-2014; and Los Angeles Magazine Super Lawyers Top 50 Women Lawyers 2012 – 2014; among other recognitions.
In addition to Depp and Jolie, Wasser has also represented celebrities including Britney Spears, Ryan Reynolds, Kim Kardashian, Nick Lachey, and Heidi Klum.
“There’s a mythology of Laura Wasser in Hollywood,” Brian Grazer, co founder of Imagine Entertainment, who was one of Wasser’s clients in 2006 during his divorce from Gigi Levangie Grazer, said. “She has a reputation for being tough.”
In a statement, Pitt said the focus is now on the “well-being of our kids.”
“I am very saddened by this, but what matters most now is the well-being of our kids,” he said, as reported by People. “I kindly ask the press to give them the space they deserve during this challenging time.”
Court documents reveal that Jolie has requested physical custody of the couple’s shared six children and is asking that Pitt be allowed to have visitation rights.
