Lakers Rumors: The host of an Internet radio station has a wild prediction. According to him, LeBron James and Kevin Durant will join hands and form a super team next season in Los Angeles.
Both Durant and James will be unrestricted free agents this summer. Though the prediction is far-fetched, it’s worth noting that the Lakers will be armed with nearly $68 million in cap space. Therefore, technically, the Lakers will be capable of signing both Durant and James.
In fact, there are only three teams who will have enough cap room to sign both superstar forwards. The Lakers, the Dallas Mavericks and Philadelphia 76ers are all projected to have more than $65 million to spend during the offseason. If you glance through next season’s free agency class, there aren’t too many worthy of a max contract. Where will the aforementioned three teams spend all that money? Could one of them actually entertain the idea of pairing James and Durant?
If this happens, it would be similar to when James joined hands with Chris Bosh and Dwyane Wade in Miami to form a super team that made four consecutive finals and won two championships.
Different career paths…
Durant and James have a ton of respect for each other. They’ve worked out together on several occasions and formed a close bond as part of the previous two Olympic teams. Despite their friendship, both superstars are on entirely different career paths. While Durant is still seeking his first ring, James is determined to bring his hometown of Cleveland a sports championship after 50+ years.
A few weeks ago, Lake Show Life also looked into the dream scenario of Durant and James joining hands. “If both LeBron and Durant decide to opt out of their current contracts, you can be sure that almost every team in the league will be selling them on these exact same points,” wrote Eric Yee.
With Kobe Bryant’s exit, the Lakers are desperately in need of a new franchise players. Will they be getting two franchise players? Who will take Bryant’s place?
