Luke Walton, who won two championships with the Los Angeles Lakers as a player, is expected to return to town as the head coach next season, according to latest Lakers Rumors.

Last month, Walton, presently assistant coach for the Golden State Warriors, hired the Wasserman Media Group to represent him in negotiations for a heading coaching job during the off-season. While the New York Knicks have also been linked with Walton, league sources reckon that the budding coach wants to return to L.A.

Since Byron Scott took over head coaching duties last season, the Lakers have won 34 games and lost 112. There is very little doubt that Scott, a former Showtime Laker, would be fired this summer.

Walton and the Warriors got a taste of the emerging Lakers squad, led by a battery of young talent, on Sunday when they suffered one of the biggest upsets in regular season history. Surely, Walton would have come out of the game impressed with the young Lakers core.

Impressed with Russell, Nance & Co…

A few days ago, Walton admitted that the Lakers were getting better with each passing day. “I think they’ve got some good, young talent. D’Angelo (Russell) looks like he’s really starting to figure out the speed of the NBA game. He’s playing fluid and controlling the tempo, like he did in college. I’m a fan of (Larry) Nance,” said the son of former league MVP, Bill Walton.

“Obviously, they still need some pieces, but they’re moving in the right direction,” added Walton. With close to $68 million to spend in free agency, the Lakers are expected to return to playoff contention next season.

Walton reiterated that he’s happy playing second fiddle to Steve Kerr in Oakland. However, all signs point to him leaving Warriors for a head coaching gig next season. “We know what we have going on here is pretty darn special. I don’t think any of us are in a hurry to try to get out of here.”

Last season, assistant coach Alvin Gentry bolted for a head coaching job from the New Orleans Pelicans despite the Warriors’ historic 67-win season. It seems like Walton is following suit.
