What's This?

Derrick Williams, the New York Knicks forward, is keen on returning to his hometown of Los Angeles if he opts out of his contract this July, according to latest Lakers Rumors.

A few days ago, Williams revealed that the Lakers exhibited strong interest in signing the former University of Arizona product during the previous off-season. However, Williams chose to sign with the Knicks instead.

“That’s (Los Angeles) my home,’’ the former No. 2 draft pick told the New York Post. “I’m from L.A., Orange County. I love it but at the same time I’m here, love playing in New York, home away from home. This weekend (Knicks vs Lakers) will be great. I haven’t been home since August. It’s always great to play before family and friends. I can’t wait to go back,” added Williams.

Likely to opt out…

Williams, averaging 8.9 points and 3.5 rebounds this season, is likely to opt out of the final year of his $4.5 million contract, which he signed last off-season. “I felt like I picked the right spot where I wanted to be — that was New York to play with Carmelo (Anthony), I knew they had a great pick in KP, all the pieces we have here. We haven’t played well the last month, but I don’t think it sums up our whole season,” added Williams.

Many basketball pundits reckon that the 6-foot-8 power forward is still to achieve his full potential. After being drafted with No. 2 overall pick in 2011, Williams has been bounced around from Minnesota Timberwolves to Sacramento Kings before finding a desired home in New York.

Start-stop career…

Despite his start-stop career, Williams is still one of the most athletic forwards in the league, something he validated during his highlight reel performance against Phoenix Suns last Wednesday. During the fourth quarter of that game, Williams exhibited his stunning aerial display which resulted in 18 points, including three alley-oop dunks in the final period of the Knicks’ rout in Phoenix.

Granted that Williams hasn’t been able to generate such performances on a nightly basis, should the Lakers consider signing him for next season?
