Lakers Rumors: Jeanie Buss To Fire Entire Front Office This Summer?
Lakers Rumors: Jeanie Buss, the principal owner of the Los Angeles Lakers, could take some drastic steps and clean up the entire front office this summer, which would include sacking her brother Jim as the Vice President of Basketball Operations.Advertisement
The story was broken by Stephen A Smith, popular ESPN analyst, in the aftermath of the Lakers’ embarrassing 48-point defeat to the Utah Jazz on Monday night. “Jeanie Buss, for some reason, hasn’t done it yet (clean up the front office). I am hearing that she could do it this summer. She could fire Jim Buss, Mitch Kupchak (the GM), Byron Scott (the coach) and the entire front office,” Smith said during ESPN First Take on Tuesday morning.
Smith, however, defended Kupchak, the general manager and former Showtime Laker. “I don’t wish this on Mitch because I think he knows what he’s doing. Sadly, he is aligned with Jim Buss. When it comes to the Lakers, you’ve got to eradicate the situation at the top. If you have basketball minds running the franchise, we could see them turning around their fortunes.”
Jeanie and Jim, kids of late Lakers owner Dr. Jerry Buss, weren’t in the best of terms before their father passed away in February 2013. According to league insiders, the siblings haven’t spoken to one another after Jim decided to hire coach Mike D’Antoni over Jeanie’s partner, Phil Jackson. Last summer, Jeanie said that her brother would be forced to vacate his front office job if the Purple & Gold didn’t make a deep run in the postseason over the next few seasons.
With the Lakers in the midst of their worst-ever season, the feeling within the organization is that wholesale changes are coming soon. Earlier this year, there was also speculation that Phil Jackson could quit as president of New York Knicks and return to the Lakers next season.
Will Jerry West return to save the Lakers? Or will it be Phil Jackson?
