What's This?

Dwight Howard, Houston Rockets’ disgruntled center, is set to opt out of his current contract and become a free agent this summer. According to latest Knicks Rumors, the former all-star is giving strong consideration to New York as a possible destination.

The Knicks will have approximately $18 million to spend this off-season. With an elite point guard still atop of their wish list, they would also hope to find an upgrade to Robin Lopez at the 5 spot.

According to ESPN’s Knicks reporter Ian Begley, Howard will view New York as a possibility. “Some of Howard’s friends have let it be known recently that the center would be interested in coming to New York as a free agent if he opts out of his current contract, league sources say,” wrote Begley.

Worth the gamble?

The million-dollar question: Are Knicks interested in Howard? After all, this is the same player who has seen a significant dip in defensive and offensive efficiency this season. Howard is no longer considered an elite rim protector, not to mention all the off-the-court controversies that seem to surround the former three-time defensive player of the year.

Should Phil Jackson and the Knicks ignore Howard’s locker room troubles? Will Howard really make Knicks a better team? Fox Sports’ Dieter Kurtenbach reckons that Howard and Knicks are a perfect match but for not entirely the right reasons. “Howard seems to bring drama everywhere he goes. The Knicks are in a perpetual state of dysfunction. These two should not, under any circumstances, get together,” he wrote.

If the Knicks want a more level-headed big man, they can always pursue Al Horford or Joakim Noah – who will bring more professionalism but lesser skill. It also boils down to who they think would be a better fit with Kristaps Porzingis in the front court. Will a duo of Howard and Porzingis work?
