What's This?

Jeremy Lin could be heading back to the Houston Rockets this summer after the team hired Mike D’Antoni as their new coach. One NBA insider believes the Rockets are now on top of the list of Lin’s possible destination when the former Harvard University becomes a free agent in July.

NBA analyst Ric Bucher said that Lin could decide to opt out of the final year of his contract after earning himself a big payday this summer with his performance this season. The 27-year-old point guard averaged 11.7 points to go along with 3.2 rebounds and 3.0 assists in his first season in Charlotte.

Lin is due for a raise this summer, and D’Antoni’s arrival in Houston reportedly gave “Linsanity” more leverage. The Hornets, who are interested in keeping Lin, will have to be wary of the Rockets, giving the California native and his camp a reason to demand for a bigger pay check.

“Now that Mike D’Antoni has been named as the head coach of the Houston Rockets, he has been afforded more leverage as far as the next contract that he gets and perhaps another destination outside of Charlotte,” Bucher said.

And even if Charlotte puts a tempting offer on the table, Lin might turn it down and reunite with D’Antoni, who was instrumental in Lin’s rise to stardom in 2012. Playing under D’Antoni’s high-octane offense, “Linsanity” averaged 23.9 points and 9.2 assists in a span of 11 games with the New York Knicks four years ago.

Following his breakout season, Lin opted to move to the Rockets. He played two season in Houston but did not find his comfort zone playing alongside James Harden. Harden is still with the Rockets, but the veteran NBA analyst thinks D’Antoni could convince Lin he has ways to make him co-exist with high-scoring guard.

“D’Antoni has the ability to convince Lin that under his system that both of them could get everything that they want,” Bucher continued. He also added familiarity and strong relationship between Lin and D’Antoni will be a factor in potential talks this summer.
