“We are beyond thrilled with this incredibly talented duo of stars for Hairspray Live!,” NBC Entertainment Chairman Robert Greenblatt said in a report by E! News. He also stated that Fierstein had created the role of Edna Turnblad on Broadway with an unforgettable “Tony- winning performance that demanded to be memorialized on film.” In addition, he also said that they were happy that Fierstein also wanted to step into Edna’s shoes “one last, unforgettable time.”
With Jennifer Hudson‘s casting on the show, Greenblatt said the team behind the revival feels thankful that she would be portraying the role of Motormouth Maybelle and that they knew “her rendition of “I Know Where I’ve Been” will literally stop the show.”
According to Page Six, Hudson was part of the Broadway revival of “The Color Purple.” She had won an Oscar and Golden Globe awards in the hit 2007 film “Dreamgirls” along with Eddie Murphy, Jamie Foxx, and Beyonce Knowles.
Fierstein had portrayed the role of Edna Turnblad on the show’s first two years out of its seven-year run on Broadway. John Travolta famously played the role in its big- screen adaptation on 2007. While Queen Latifah portrayed the role of Motormouth Maybelle in the same movie.
According to TV Line, “Hairspray” was about a curvaceous young woman named Tracy Turnblad who challenged prejudices with her moves and fearlessness. The role Edna was originally played by the late Divine in a 1988 film adaptation by John Waters. Ruth Brown portrayed the role of Motormouth in 1988.
In addition, “Grease Live” director Alex Rudzinski had joined the team of “Hairspray Live!” with executive producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron.
