Jeff Green Re-United With Doc Rivers In Clippers, Lance Stephenson Sent to Memphis
Jeff Green has been re-united with Doc Rivers after the Los Angeles Clippers acquired the veteran swingman from Memphis Grizzlies for Lance Stephenson and a future first-round draft pick.Advertisement
The draft pick, according to ESPN’s Zach Lowe, is a heavily protected 2019 first-rounder but ensures that Grizzlies acquires an asset for Green, who is set to hit free agency in the offseason. It’s still unclear if Memphis intend to keep Stephenson or waive him.
Green will bring veteran leadership, perimeter defense and playoff experience to an already-loaded Clippers squad. More importantly, Green will get to play under the coach he reached near all-star status during his stint with the Boston Celtics.
The Clippers have been in the news for the wrong reasons since Blake Griffin’s reported flare up with the team’s equipment manager. Since the incident, there has been wide speculation if the team would rip apart the nucleus of Chris Paul, Blake Griffin and DeAndre Jordan and press the reset button. However, recent re-assurances from Rivers are a positive sign for the Clippers fanbase.
Griffin future still uncertain…
There is still a feeling that Griffin would be traded over the summer if Clippers fail to make noise in the postseason. You could say that this will be the last roll of the dice.
Stephenson, who has been bounced around since signing with Charlotte Hornets last offseason, is averaging only 4.7 points per game this season from less than 16 minutes per game. Green is averaging 12.2 points and 4.5 rebounds per game from a little over 29 minutes per game.
It made a ton of sense for Memphis to trade Green since the forward is expected to test free agency over the summer. By trading him, they have secured a future asset, at the least.
With the Clippers still searching for permanency at the 3 spot, expect Jeff Green to swoop into the starting unit.
