James Cameron surprised the audience at Fox’s CinemaCon presentation last Thursday in Las Vegas. The Academy Award-winning director revealed that “Avatar” will have four sequels with Avatar 2 set to be released on Christmas 2018.
It was previously announced that Avatar will have three sequels, with Avatar 2 set for 2017. Cameron found while planning the sequels that three installments are not enough to tell the whole story of Avatar. Each sequel will be a standalone movie but will come together to complete James Cameron’s vision for the epic saga.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Cameron has been working with a team of four top screenwriters and designers to move forward with the world of Avatar. Judging from the art, Cameron is convinced that the sequels will definitely be far beyond the original film. The team will bring to life a wide range of new characters, environments, creatures, and cultures.
Deadline reported that aside from the details of the installments, Cameron also addressed another concern for the sequels. With the ever-present competition theaters face from DVDs and video streaming, Cameron stressed that the Avatar films will be released in theaters. He even gave a lengthy speech in support of the theater experience. Cameron stated that their job as filmmakers is to continue to make films onscreen.
Cameron even slammed day-and-date video-on-demand streaming service “The Screening Room,” saying it is necessary to offer movies exclusively in theaters during their initial release.
Critics are saying that the hype has died down due to the long overdue release of a sequel to one of the highest-grossing movies in history. Despite criticism, Cameron has always insisted using the best technology to give life to his vision of the film. If there’s one thing only James Cameron has always been able to do, that is to prove doubters wrong.
All the sequels will be released during Christmastime, with “Avatar 2” due on 2018, “Avatar 3” on 2020, “Avatar 4” on 2022 and “Avatar 5” on 2023.
