As the crowd looked on while a shark was attacking Fanning, Wilson’s initial reaction wasn’t to paddle away but towards his friend. “It came up and he was wrestling it, and I saw he got knocked off his board,” said Wilson who was in tears during the interview. “I was like `I’ve got a board, if I can get there I can stab it or whatever, I’ve got a weapon.” He was more worried about not getting to his friend in time. “I was like, ‘Oh no, it’s gonna grab him and take him.'” “I remember that the boat and staff where there and was like, we both just starting screaming.”
Some of the professional surfers who were there still couldn’t believe what they saw. Some shared their reactions and relief.
